Wednesday evening, 3 June, 2015, all heavens broke lose as the rains flooded most parts of Accra. Many lives were lost and properties were displaced (including some humans too). We can’t blame anyone though, not even God but rather ourselves, yes! We Ghanaians!

The key cause of these floods
is our poor handling of refuse. About 2/3 of our drains (In Accra) are choked
with rubbish and sand. Filth is everywhere, we leave rubbish around everywhere,
even not necessarily into our gutters but as long as it doesn’t end up in a
bin, it’ll surely find its way into our drain when it rains.
We need bins! ... And also
people to empty them on habitual bases. Where’s Zoomlion? They occasionally
come for our bins. At least, that keeps our households clean but what about our
environs?
Government came up with this
once-in-a-month thingy dubbed National Sanitation Day and it’s just …. [[Please
describe it for me]] Because, people organize themselves alright, sweep and
distill gutters alright, gather all those filth, good, and leave them there for
whom to come and gather them into the bins?? Who? The President or his Vice?
And amazingly and amusingly, everything they gather ends up in the drains by
the end of the month, even at times, people who pass-by pile more rubbish to it.
GOGI (Garbage Out, Garbage back In) that’s a cycle for you ;) National
Sanitation Day for you. Well done Ghanaians!
We need to wake up on our own
before the rains do. Stop the filth, utilize the bins, be each other’s keeper. Do you know littering in Singapore is an offense? and it is subject to a fine of about $300 depending on the size of item you litter.
But the highlight of the whole flood thing is the explosion of the Goil Filling Station at Circle, just behind the GCB Bank Tower. Very pitiable, I mean human lives just gone like that, within a sound of a boom! My heart goes out to the bereaved families. I still can’t fathom what went on over there. Black Wednesday indeed.

DeleteIt's undoubtedly a good piece. But I believe that Accra is a flood prone area so it's not only filth. There is pressure on the land also.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment.. but we can't afford to add more pressure to it with the filth
